Math Contests

Please use this information as a planning guide of various programs and tentative application dates. If you are aware of any additional programs we can add to our list to maximize student possibilities please forward to conleya@asmsa.org.

** The deadlines for red highlights have already past and will be updated after they publish their 2025 dates/costs.. Please familiarize yourself with available programs so you can identify your interest, know the requirements, and be ready to apply when application is published and/or comes back around the following year.

Purple Comet

Program Grades: High school students

Teams of from one to six students compete by submitting solutions to a list of mathematics problems. There is a ten-day window during which teams may compete choosing a start time most convenient for them. The problems range in difficulty from fairly easy to extremely challenging.

AMC 10/12 & AIME

Program Grades: The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below and covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade. Students in grade 12 or below and under 19.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 12.

These tests are designed for students in the 10th or 12th grade. Students scoring highly on the AMC 12 can advance and take the AIME exam for a chance to be part of the US Math Olympiad.

Trig-Star

Program Grades: High school students

This is a test of applied trigonometry skills sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors. Students can earn awards at the local and state levels and have a chance to apply for scholarships to study surveying.


Application Deadline: State Trig-Star Coordinators shall choose and submit the State Trig-Star winners to NSPS by May 1

M3 Challenge

Program Grades: High school students

Teams of 3 to 5 students are given a difficult problem in applied mathematical modeling and 14 hours to solve it and prepare a report about their solution. The solution can use programming or math software.
