Foreign Language Contests

Please familiarize yourself with available programs so you can identify your interest, know the requirements, and be ready to apply when application is published and/or comes back around the following year.

Goethe-Institute International German Olympics

Program Grades: Students must be at least 14 and no more than 17 years old during the IDO

The International German Olympics is the largest German language competition and takes place every two years. The language level of the students should be A2, B1, or B2. There are some conditions that would exclude students from participation for fairness, please click on the link to view the conditions.

Japan Bowl

Program Grades: High school students

The National Japan Bowl is America's premier Japanese-language competition. Each spring the Japan-America Society of Washington DC welcomes 200 of the country's top high school Japanese language students to the nation's capital for the competition.


Application Deadline: January 29, 2024
Program Dates: April 18-19, 2024

National Latin Exam

Program Grades: High school students

Students take a 40-question, 45-minute exam and are awarded a range of certificates. There are seven exams that students can take based on proficiency in Latin.
